Elizabeth Manchester

…came to Wimbledon College of Art to give a talk on her practice led PHD based at Chelsea College of Art and Design.  The idea was to shed some light on the benefits of taking a PHD.  So far she has been working on it for six years.

Her PHD is entitled: From the Inside Out: Models of Vision from the Vagina, takes Marcel Duchamp’s enigmatic last work Étant donnés (1946-66) and its satellite erotic objects (Female Fig Leaf, Wedge of Chastity, Dart Object) as its starting point.

On asking if the PHD had made a real difference to her practice she said ‘yes, it would not have reached the same level as it has without the PHD process’.

Extremely interesting to hear Elizabeth talk about Duchamp’s Étant donnés and his evolution of the work in itself and following on from that how this has impacted her own practice.  His piece is very strange and certainly not beautiful whereas the work coming out of Elizabeth’s PHD practice is very beautiful
