Wonderful exhibition at Victoria Miro’s Wharf Road Gallery of Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s beautiful work.
Interesting to note that the work is on paper not canvas and hung unframed on the wall by bulldog clips. The layers of collage matter give the work a physical heaviness which makes the work hang like brocaded material.
Haunting images of family members including herself and her husband. The latter you never see his face. Mix of transfers, fabric and drawing/painting cleverly put together to create a record of the convergence of African and American cultures in Njideka’ life.
Immaculately produced and carefully thought through compositions often with quite abstract elements.
