* Abstract Expressionist show at the Royal Academy: 24 September 2016 — 2 January 2017

Joan Mitchell – Mandres, 1961-1962

I enjoyed the Abstract Expressionist show at the RA. Good to see a big exhibition showcasing abstract expressionism.  Like all of the big shows the pictures are often over crowded as are the galleries. I’d have to agree with Alan Gouk, on his article on Abcrit, that the darkened rooms don’t help the viewer see and appreciate the work. Although one can understand the need for conservation of wonderful works of art.

#43. Alan Gouk writes on Abstract Expressionism at the RA

Worth reading this article by Robin Greenwood:

#42. Robin Greenwood writes on Alternative Narratives to Ab-Ex at the RA – plus a Review of the Reviews.

After reading both articles it seems one needs to go back to the RA to take another look at this show to re-assess one’s first take.
