* Tacita Dean Exhibition: La Exuberance at Frith Street Gallery, 16 September – 4 November 2016

Beautiful drawings by Tacita Dean, split between those on slate using spray chalk, gouache and white charcoal pencil and those using colour lithography to depict the vapour trails and clouds she had found striking in Los Angeles.  She had been working as artist in residence at the Getty Research institute 2014-2015 at the time.  The prints are drawn not photographic and as mentioned in the press release ‘their apparent simplicity beguiles their labour’.

I liked the use of the grid and random typography in the slate drawings and the way she has taken advantage of the ‘scuffed beauty’ of the slates… they are original Victorian-era school slates.
